Faces of Savage
Funded by SAC Artist's Project Grant
In 2011 Savage Arts Council awarded at $2,800 Artist's Project Grant to Patricia Kness and Kathy Gates Gilmore for their community portrait project, Faces of Savage. The artists were inspired by a project at the Smithsonian Institue of Art done by mid-west artist Rose Fransen who painted over 200 member of her small town.
Gates-Gilmore and Kness decided that they would do the same thing, then re-calculated as they couldn't committ to a full time schedule. They began scheduling people to sit for portraits once a week. The only requirement is that everyone must live or work in Savage. Thus the Faces of Savage was born.
Soon word spread and the artists submitted a Grant request to SAC for materials. The council was pleased to award the artists a grant to go towards their costs of materials for the project.
In April the artists will be doing a show of the complete body of work that they have done this year. They estimate that they will have about 104 portrait sketches in the display which will be up for 6 weeks at Savage Art Studios and Gallery in Savage's Hamilton Distirct.
